Video conferencing platforms like Microsoft Teams have become indispensable tools of collaboration for a diversified workforce. Microsoft Teams filters, such as the virtual makeup try-on, are transforming the way users present themselves during virtual meetings. This innovative feature, developed in collaboration with Maybelline New York, is an exciting step towards blending the virtual and physical worlds.

Reimagining Makeup for the Digital Workspace

Maybelline New York, a global cosmetics giant, has partnered with Microsoft to bring a unique experience to Teams users. Their newly introduced Maybelline Beauty app in Teams enables users to apply a range of virtual makeup looks within a Teams meeting, offering a low-barrier way to experiment with different styles and express personal style in the workplace.

Maybelline's mission has always been to democratize makeup and empower individuals with self-confidence. This innovative collaboration with Microsoft Teams expands their accessibility further by entering the virtual world at scale.

"That's why we partnered with Microsoft Teams to develop virtual makeup looks - now even on the busiest day, you can put makeup on with just a click. We hope we make people's lives a little easier," said Trisha Ayyagari, Global Brand President of Maybelline New York.

The Power of AI in Virtual Makeup Try-On

The virtual makeup try-on feature is powered by Modiface AI, an augmented reality technology owned by Maybelline's parent company L'Oreal. This technology identifies over 70 points on the user's face to create a virtual map, enabling the seamless application of digital filters.

Modiface's sophisticated technology has been a popular choice for virtual makeup try-on experiences, used by various cosmetics companies like Sephora and Estee Lauder. It's a testament to their innovation that L'Oreal acquired Modiface in 2018, recognizing the potential of this technology.

Ensuring Diversity and Inclusion

In addition to Modiface, the Maybelline Beauty app was developed in collaboration with the Geena Davis Institute, a nonprofit organization committed to improving inclusion and diversity within media. This partnership ensures that the virtual makeup looks cater to a broad and diverse population.

"The new Maybelline Beauty App in Microsoft Teams is a great example of how, together with our partners, we are giving people more ways to express themselves in hybrid work environments using the power of AI," commented Nicole Herskowitz, Vice President of Microsoft Teams.

How to Use the Maybelline App in Microsoft Teams

The Maybelline Beauty app is user-friendly and intuitive. To apply a virtual makeup look, follow these steps:

Before your meeting:

  • Click on "Join meeting"
  • Click "Video Effects"
  • Then "More Video Effects"
  • Scroll down in the right pane and select "Maybelline" under the "Filters" category
  • Scroll down to view all and select your favorite look
  • Click "Join now"

If you've already joined a meeting:

  • Click "More…" at the top of your meeting screen
  • Click "Video Effects"
  • Scroll down in the right pane and select "Maybelline" under the "Filters" category
  • Scroll down to view all and select your favorite look
  • Click "Preview" to see your selected look without others viewing yet or "Apply" to turn on your favorite look

This new feature is globally available for Teams enterprise customers. It's an exciting evolution in the Teams filters and a demonstration of the potential of virtual makeup try-on technology.

The Broader Context: Virtual Try-On Technology in Other Brands

Virtual try-on technology is not exclusive to Microsoft Teams filters. Other brands are also leveraging this technology to enhance customer experience and sales. For instance, Sephora's Virtual Artist app allows customers to try on thousands of shades of lipstick, eyeshadow, false lashes, and many more in real-time. Similarly, Warby Parker uses AR technology for virtual glasses try-on, and IKEA allows customers to place virtual furniture in their homes using their AR app.

By presenting customers with a highly interactive and personalized shopping experience, these brands are not only increasing customer engagement but also driving purchase decisions. The ability to virtually try products reduces the uncertainty associated with online shopping and has proven to increase conversion rates and reduce returns.

Beyond Makeup: The Potential of Virtual Try-On Technology in Other Industries

While the beauty industry has been a front-runner in adopting virtual try-on technology, its potential extends far beyond makeup. Fashion retailers can use it for virtual clothing try-ons, and the furniture industry can use it for virtual interior design. Even the healthcare industry can benefit from this technology, with virtual try-ons of prosthetics or visualizations of plastic surgery results.

In education, virtual try-on can provide students with an immersive learning experience. For example, medical students can use it for virtual dissections or surgeries, and history students can virtually try on historical costumes to understand the past better. The possibilities are limitless.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Virtual Try-On Technology

As we move forward, we can expect virtual try-on technology to become even more sophisticated, with hyper-realistic simulations and real-time analytics. AI and machine learning will continue to play a crucial role in improving the accuracy and personalization of virtual try-ons.

Moreover, with the advent of virtual and augmented reality, the line between the physical and digital worlds will continue to blur. We'll see more brands bridging this gap, offering customers seamless experiences that blend the convenience of online shopping with the tangibility of in-store shopping.

While the Maybelline virtual makeup try-on is an exciting advancement in Microsoft Teams filters, it's just the tip of the iceberg. The future of virtual try-on technology is bright, promising a revolution in the way we shop, learn, and even interact with each other. As Trisha Ayyagari, Global Brand President of Maybelline New York, aptly said, "Now, we want to expand our accessibility further by entering the virtual world at scale." The journey is just beginning.
